With some basic sewing skills and a few simple items, you can easily create a microwavable heating bag that can provide relief for aches and pains. This project can be completed in an afternoon and can be used for years to come. If you’ve relied on hot water bottles or electric heating pads in the past, consider this alternative!

To begin, gather together the supplies you’ll need. You’ll want to find cotton fabric in a print that you enjoy. You can also choose a soft, plush fabric for a removable outer pouch. To fill your heating bag, you can use rice, feed corn, beans, or even flaxseeds. Essential oils can provide soothing fragrance–we especially like lavender, which can have calming effects.

Putting this project together requires only a little experience with a needle and thread or a sewing machine. Cut your fabric into the shape you desire (no pattern needed!) and sew it about 3/4 of the way shut. Add your filling of choice and any add-ons like dried herbs. Then, sew all the way shut and try out your new microwavable heating device!
